Ear wax is normal: the ear cleans itself, quietly, most of the time. Now and then it builds up and blocks the canal, and hearing goes dull.
When it starts, removal here will be by microsuction: a small suction device and a light, with no water flushed into the ear. The pharmacist looks
We look inside with a small light. That tells us whether wax is really the problem.
We tell you what we found
If it is wax, we say so and talk you through softening drops. If it is not, we say that instead.
You leave knowing where you stand
Either it is something you can sort at home, or it needs a GP. We say plainly which.

What we can do today, and what we cannot.
We are not removing wax yet. The microsuction machine is on order, so we are not taking bookings, and we would rather say so here than let you ring and find out.
What a pharmacist can do today is look in the ear and tell you whether wax is the problem at all. If it looks like an infection or a perforated eardrum, you want to know now rather than after a fortnight of drops.
When it arrives we will say so here and open bookings.

Questions people ask.
Can I book to have ear wax removed?
Not yet. The microsuction machine is on order and has not arrived, so we are not taking bookings for removal. Ring us anyway if an ear is blocked, because a pharmacist can look and tell you whether it is wax, which is usually the thing you want to know first.
What is microsuction?
A small suction device and a light, used to lift wax out of the ear. Nothing is flushed into the ear with water, which is what most people are thinking of when they picture having wax removed. It is the method we will be using once the machine arrives.
Should I use drops?
Speak to us before you start. Which drops suit, and for how long, depends on what the ear looks like. It is a short conversation that saves a fortnight of doing the wrong thing.
What if it turns out not to be wax?
Then we tell you, and we tell you who to see. If the ear looks infected, or the eardrum perforated, we signpost you instead. Being sent to the right place beats waiting.
Where else can I get wax removed in the meantime?
Ring us and ask. What the NHS offers varies from area to area and it changes, so rather than send you somewhere out of date we will check for you.
Will you let me know when you can do it?
Yes. Ring and say you would like telling, and we will let you know when it starts. This page is updated the day the machine arrives and we open bookings.
